Replacing a car battery is easier to replace than most people imagine and can even be done by someone with limited technical knowledge. By replacing the battery yourself it’s possible to save money on garage fees as well as having the satisfaction of completing a job yourself.
Due to the nature of the task it will involve getting your hands dirty and dealing with large amounts of electricity and because of this last point precautions need to be taken. Safety Precautions
As I’ve mentioned and you’ll probably already be aware, there is a large amount of electricity that passes through a car battery. It therefore makes sense that you replace the battery in very dry conditions. If it’s raining it’s best to do it in a garage but ensure that your hands and any area nearer the battery is completely dry
Again this may sound basic but make sure the ignition is turned off as this will prevent electricity passing through some of the connectors you’ll have to handle. To be 100% sure the engine is off and has no chance of being turned on whilst you’re working, take the key out of the ignition and keep it in your pocket at all times.
Although not a safety tips as such, disposal of your old battery is an important part of the replacement process. As with all batteries, car batteries need to be disposed of in a responsible manner to limit the environmental impact. Take it to your nearest recycling centre and they will ensure it’s recycled properly.
Car Battery Replacement Instructions
1) Isolate the power supply by removing keys from the ignition and keep them in your pocket at all times
2) Open bonnet and prop open. Ensure its securely fixed so that it won’t fall down and cause injury during the operation
3) Disconnect both the positive and negative wire from the old battery and remove. Ensure that you remember which way round the battery sits
4) Insert the new battery in the same position as the old battery and reconnect both the positive and negative connectors
5) Ensure battery is secured and close bonnet
6) Turn on your engine and start the car! You’ve done it!
