Car Battery Problems

It is a proven fact that car battery problems occur; it is just a part of life. Diagnosing these problems can be a bit frustrating as well as time consuming. Just like every person on the planet is different in some way, the same goes for cars and car batteries; not all car batteries are created equal. Some drain quicker than others do and need to be replaced more often.

There are two types of car batteries on the market today: ones that require routine maintenance to be able to work efficiently and those that are maintenance-free. The only way to take care of a dead maintenance-free battery is to replace it entirely, while the routine maintenance battery can be recharged and refilled with water. There are several reasons for car battery problems including temperature differences, routine wear and tear, physical damage, and inadequate installation, as well as overcharging. If you lived in a warmer climate and end up moving to a colder climate, letting your vehicle sit in that colder climate for an extended period can cause the battery to become bad.

Another reason for a battery problem is general wear and tear; this problem can be solved by having your car battery routinely tested and cleaned. When you have the battery cleaned, make sure that the terminals and main battery cables are free from any buildup and are not corroded in any way. You should also have the water replaced during routine maintenance of your car such as a state inspection or oil change.

One more reason for battery problems is physical damage due to a car accident or a crack in the battery. In the event of such an occurrence, it is recommended that you immediately replace the damaged car battery to avoid any other problems with the vehicle such as an acid leak from a crack in the car battery. If you do not replace the car battery, it can end up causing more damage resulting in more costly repairs down the road.

Yet another reason for battery problems is inadequate installation. This occurs because one or both battery cables are not properly connected, or the battery terminals are not properly tightened. This problem can be avoided by having a trained technician install your car battery for you; you should not try to install your own car battery if you have never done it before or are unsure of how to hook it up properly.

The final reason for car battery problems is overcharging of the battery. This occurs when the owner of the vehicle charges a low battery to the point where it becomes overcharged. Overcharging the battery too many times can cause it to drain to the point of needing replaced.

If you follow the tips outlined above you can avoid most of the car battery problems that occur during the life cycle of your battery. This will save you a great deal of time, money in the long run as well as the frustration of having to replace your car battery prematurely.
